The Bookstore Is Located Within A Unique Cultural District

Established in 1994 by owners Ann and Jerry Matera and Tom Chaney, The Bookstore is the largest independently owned bookstore in South Central Kentucky and among the largest in the state.  It is located in historic downtown Horse Cave, one of the first communities in the state certified by the Kentucky Arts Council as a Cultural District.

The Bookstore has an inventory of over 50,000 books and carries both new and used books -  hardcover and paperback – of various genres including fiction, mysteries, romance, thrillers, biographies, young adult, children, general history, Kentucky history, local authors and more.  If you can't stop in, shop our online store at Alibris Book Service.

Each morning, The Bookstore also hosts the downtown philosophical association. As Tom likes to say, "It is open to anyone with the price of a cup of coffee (or not) where matters of great import are wallowed around and where facts are ever reshaped into a good story and truth is constantly being expanded and refined.”
